Jon Lester dominated for eight innings, and the Chicago Cubs bullpen was just good enough in the ninth for yet another victory.

Lester pitched eight scoreless innings, Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer and the Cubs held off the host Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Monday night.

Lester (7-3) improved to 6-0 in eight career starts against the Phillies while lowering his ERA against them to 1.46. He struck out nine, walked none and allowed four hits.

"He's really on top of his game right now," Chicago manager Joe Maddon said.

So are the rest of the Cubs. Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler each had three hits as Chicago won for the 11th time in 13 games while extending its best start since 1900 to a major league-leading 40-16.

Philadelphia scored all of its runs in the ninth after Maddon elected not to send Lester out for an attempt at a shutout. Lester threw 95 pitches and had to wait out a lengthy top of the ninth.

"It was really an easy decision once we got the sixth run," Maddon said. "It just didn't play out right. We had to fasten our seatbelts in the ninth."

Lester said he didn't lobby hard to stay in the game. "I told Joe I was fine, but I also told him that he's the manager," he said. "I've tried before with him, and I think I've won maybe one in the last two years."

Justin Grimm gave up a pair of singles and Freddy Galvis' three-run homer without recording an out. Closer Hector Rondon relieved Grimm and allowed Tommy Joseph's solo shot to center. Rondon then got two quick outs before Odubel Herrera's pinch-hit single brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. Rondon got Ryan Howard to ground out to earn his 11th save in as many chances.

New York at Pittsburgh, ppd.: The game was postponed by rain after a delay of 1 hour, 35 minutes and will be made up as part of a doubleheader Tuesday.

American League

Texas 6, Houston 5: Rougned Odor had a walk-off double for his third RBI of the night as the host Rangers beat the Astros. Odor, who earlier in the game had a homer and a sacrifice fly, got the winner with an opposite-field drive that ricocheted off the left field wall and past Colby Rasmus. Adrian Beltre scored from first base after reaching on a fielder's choice. Texas is 7-0 against the Astros this season and has won 11 in row at home against its AL West rival.

New York 5, Los Angeles 2: Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, Aroldis Chapman quickly returned to form and the host Yankees rallied past the Angels. Beltran was the first batter Jose Alvarez faced after relieving starter Matt Shoemaker. Two-out singles by Jacoby Ellsbury and Brett Gardner prompted the Angels to go to their bullpen, and Beltran struck for his 14th homer.

Detroit 11, Toronto 0: Michael Fulmer gave up two hits over six innings in another outstanding performance, and Justin Upton and James McCann homered to lift the host Tigers to their fourth consecutive victory. Fulmer (6-1), acquired in the Yoenis Cespedes trade, struck out five and walked three in his third start in a row without giving up a run.

Baltimore 4, Kansas City 1: Mark Trumbo and Matt Wieters hit solo homers in the seventh inning to back a sparkling pitching performance by Mike Wright, and the host Orioles extended the Royals' losing streak to five games. Manny Machado also homered for the Orioles, who have won five of six — all in come-from-behind fashion.
