Mississippi State hired Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as its football coach, bringing in another up-and-comer who is largely in the mold of previous coach Dan Mullen.

The school announced the hiring Wednesday morning. The 44-year-old Moorhead replaces Mullen, who left Starkville, Miss., after nine successful seasons to become Florida's new coach Sunday.

The new coach inherits a good situation at Mississippi State. The 24th-ranked Bulldogs were 8-4 this season with a roster that features only a handful of senior starters.

"I am thrilled to take the reins of an SEC program that has been as successful as this one has the past decade," Moorhead said. "I look forward to getting to know the young men on our team, hiring a staff and hitting the recruiting trail quickly."

Moorhead has been with Penn State the past two seasons, calling plays for one of the best offenses in the country.

Oregon State hires former Beaver QB

Oregon State hired Washington co-offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith to be its new head coach.

Smith is a former Beavers quarterback and who has been working as quarterbacks coach for coach Chris Petersen since 2012, starting at Boise State and following him to Washington in 2014.

Edwards to interview at Arizona State

Former NFL coach and current ESPN analyst Herm Edwards will interview for the vacant Arizona State coaching job this week.

Edwards has not coached since 2008, when he was fired after a 2-14 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He coached the New York Jets from 2001-05 and has spent the past nine years as an analyst for ESPN.

Big Ten honors

Division champions Ohio State and Wisconsin have four players apiece on the coaches' All-Big Ten first team for offense.

The conference announced the offensive honorees Wednesday. Postseason individual awards will be announced Thursday.

East champion Ohio State has quarterback J.T. Barrett, guard Michael Jordan, center Billy Price and tackle Jamarco Jones on the first team.

West champion Wisconsin has running back Jonathan Taylor, tight end Troy Fumagalli, tackle Michael Deiter and guard Beau Benzschawel on the team.

Also named first team were Penn State running back Saquon Barkley, Indiana receiver Simmie Cobbs and Maryland receiver DJ Moore.
