Minnesota wind power

Minnesota is one of the leading wind-power states.

Rank: Third in share of power from wind (9.7 percent), behind Iowa and North Dakota.

Capacity: 2,518 megawatts, equivalent to power used by 700,000 homes. Ranked fourth (Texas, Iowa, California).

Industry players

Xcel Energy, based in Minneapolis, has the most wind-power capacity of any investor-owned U.S. utility.

Great River Energy, based in Maple Grove, has the second-largest wind portfolio among rural electric cooperatives.

EnXco, the U.S. renewable energy unit of Paris-based EDF Energies Nouvelles Co., has built nine wind farms in Minnesota. Its Midwest office is in Minneapolis.
