Nate Gunn helped Minnesota State Mankato overcome Tarleton State and the snow and wind in the Division II quarterfinals on Saturday in Mankato.
Gunn rushed for 261 yards — on a school single-game record 50 carries — to help the Mavericks rally from a 10-0 deficit. Gunn's 13-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 47 seconds remaining gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game.
After Gunn's touchdown, the Texans started at their 30-yard line and reach the Mavericks 45, before the Mavericks defense stopped them on a 4th-and-3.
The Mavericks started the comeback with a touchdown in the first minute of the fourth quarter.
Ryan Schlichte's 5-yard pass to Shane Zylstra on fourth down and the ensuing PAT with 14:10 remaining capped a 27-play, 97-yard drive. The touchdown was the only passing play of the drive, which consumed 12:09.
Gunn, a junior from Minooka, Ill., carried 18 times for 69 yards on the drive.
For the game, the Mavericks rushed 71 times for 350 yards.
Mineral Water Bowl
Missouri S&T 51, MSU Moorhead 16: Tyler Swart passed for four touchdowns and ran for a touchdown to lead the Miners past the Dragons in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
The Miners, who trailed 6-0 going into the second quarter, rallied to take a 21-9 halftime lead and then broke the game open with three touchdowns in about a three-minute span in the third quarter to open a 48-9 lead.
Bryce Meehl passed for 191 yards and two touchdowns for the Dragons.
