The Timberwolves will hold a free open scrimmage featuring Kevin Garnett, Ricky Rubio, No. 1 picks Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns, and the rest of the team Oct. 5.

Tickets are required, though, and can be claimed online at starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday. There's a limit of six free tickets per order. Gates open at 6 p.m. and concession and merchandise vendors will be open. Season-ticket holders have access to a VIP seating area. The Wolves play their first preseason game two nights later at home, against Oklahoma City on Oct. 7.


• Junior forward Simone Kolander of the Gophers was named the Big Ten offensive player of the week in women's soccer. She scored the winning goals in a 2-1 victory over then No. 20 Ohio State and in a 1-0 win over then No. 4 Penn State.

• The Gophers women's golf team finished eighth in the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Celia Kuenster and Heather Ciskowski finished tied for 18th with 6-over 219s. … The Gophers men's golf team was ninth in Washington's Husky Invitational led by junior Justin Doeden who tied for 10th (5-over 218),

• Ted Riverso, a former Gophers women's basketball assistant for eight seasons, was named the head coach of the Augsburg women's basketball team. He held the same position at St. Thomas from 1984-99.
