The Vikings signed cornerback Jalil Carter to a reserve/future contract Wednesday. The 6-2, 205-pound Carter spent the past three seasons with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.

Carter played on the Argonauts' Grey Cup champion in 2012 and appeared in 34 regular-season games total for them. He was second on the team last season in both tackles (48) and sacks (five), but Toronto released him on Tuesday.

He played college football at Akron, where he was a safety and receiver. He signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent in 2011 before being cut.

U women gymnasts lose

Despite winning three of four events, the No. 11 Gophers lost 194.325-193.350 to Maryland in their Big Ten women's gymnastics opener at College Park, Md.

Gophers junior Lindsay Mable took first in vault (9.875) and floor exercise (9.900) and was the all-around winner (38.850) while teammate Hannah Nordquist won the balance beam (9.875).

The Gophers (1-1), the two-time defending regular-season champions, fell behind by 1.2 points after the first rotation but trailed by just .025 of a point into the final rotation. But the Terrapins, competing in their first Big Ten dual, finished with a strong showing in floor exercise (49.000) to build on their lead.

• Senior Connor Olson of Wayzata was named the repeat winner of the Gatorade boys' cross-country runner of the year award. Olson, who has signed with the Gophers, won the individual Class 2A state title last fall, helping the Trojans finish first as a team, too. He was 12th in the Nike Cross Nationals on Dec. 6.
