Minnesota Scene: United beat U21 Mexican team in shootout

Minnesota United FC edged the under-21 Mexican national team in a shootout on Friday at the National Sports Center after a 1-1 tie through regulation.

Christian Ramirez scored for United in the first minute on a cross from Jamie Watson. Jorge Espericueta scored for Mexico on a free kick in the 37th minute. United won the shootout 4-3, thanks to two saves by goalkeeper Mitch Hildebrandt. The exhibition attracted a crowd announced at 8,059.

• Three local athletes will compete in the USA Track and Field Junior National meet this weekend in Eugene, Ore. They are Bryan Bjerk of the Gophers in the discus, and Connor O'Neill and Ryan Trapp, both of the University of St. Thomas, in the pole vault and 800-meter run, respectively. The competition, which spotlights the nation's top age 19-and-under athletes, will be videostreamed live on USATF.tv at 4:50 p.m. Minnesota time on Saturday and at 4:45 p.m. Sunday.

• Zane Grabau of Waterville, Minn., and Melissa Gacek of White Bear Lake won the individual men's and women's titles in the Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon and Relay. Grabau won in 1 hour, 12 minutes, 53 seconds, Gacek in 1:22:17.

• The St. Paul Saints, who lost 7-1 to the Gary SouthShore Railcats on the road, signed Andy Johnson, a former pitcher for Wayzata High School and Bradley.
