Minnesota scene: U loses top point guard to Miami

August 8, 2013 at 11:57AM

The new Gophers men's basketball coaching staff has been making progress in revamping recruiting efforts, but things can't be turned around right away.

Proof of that came Wednesday, when four-star recruit Ja'Quan Newton's committed to Miami (Fla.). Newton, ranked No. 41 in the nation by Rivals.com, confirmed his decision via text message.

The Minnesota staff felt it had a solid chance with the 6-3 Newton, whose decision came abruptly after the Philadelphia point guard narrowed his list to five schools a week ago.

One win away

Coon Rapids/Andover beat Timberline of Rapid City, S.D., 4-0 on Wednesday in the Midwest Regional in Indianapolis, meaning the northwest metro team needs one more victory to advance to the Little League Baseball World Series.

Nick Dainty pitched a one-hitter and struck out nine for Coon Rapids, 5-0 in the eight-day regional.

Wil Goodwin hit a solo homer in the first inning for Coon Rapids; Carsen Syke had two singles and two RBI.

Coon Rapids will play Urbandale, Iowa, which beat Kearney, Neb., 4-3 in the other semifinal, at noon Friday in the championship game.
