Minnesota Scene: U gymnast wins all-around, gets 10 on vault

Sophomore Lindsay Mable scored a rare 10 on vault and won the all-around at the Big Ten women's gymnastics meet Saturday at Penn State with a score of 39.650, breaking her own school record.

The only other perfect score of 10 in Minnesota program history was Carolyn Yernberg's vault on March 3, 2002.

Mable won that event, of course, in the conference meet and tied for second on bars and balance beam, with 9.900 scores in both.

Despite Mable's record day, the Gophers, who tied Nebraska for the regular-season dual meet title, placed third as a team with a score of 196.675. Michigan (197.550) won the meet while Nebraska (196.950) was second.

The Gophers opened their Big Ten baseball season by splitting a doubleheader with Northwestern on Saturday at a neutral site. Minnesota won the first game 5-1 and lost the second 4-3.

The Gophers (12-7) scored four runs in the first inning of their opener on Michael Handel's one-out grand slam.

The Wildcats (4-15) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the next game on a fielder's choice and an error with the bases loaded.

The series was moved to St. Charles, Mo., because of inclement weather in Evanston, Ill.

The Gustavus women's team finished eighth with 154 points Saturday in the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Gusties placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:33.27) and fifth in the 400 medley relay (3:46.97). Senior Alissa Tinklenberg anchored the first of those relays, led off the second, and placed fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.33). Also on both relays were Danielle Klunk and Catherine Olson.

Macalester had 35 points in the women's meet on Renee Jordan's first place in 1-meter diving (468.90) and fourth place in 3-meter diving (478.75).

St. Olaf took 14th in the men's meet with 104 points. The Oles were fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:29.98).
