Four Gophers won their quarterfinal wrestling matches Friday in the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas. They were Tommy Thorn at 141 pounds, Jake Short at 149, Brett Pfarr at 197 and Michael Kroells at heavyweight.

Short's pin of No. 16-ranked Gabe Galasso of Cornell enabled him to reach Saturday's semifinals.

In the team standings, the Gophers, who also have two wrestlers still going in the wrestlebacks, were third with 78.5 points, trailing only Oklahoma (85) and Missouri (81.5).

Concordia moves on

Host Concordia (St. Paul), the top seed, routed Central Oklahoma 25-19, 25-11, 25-11 on Friday in the second Central Region semifinal in the NCAA Division II volleyball tournament at Gangelhoff Center. Anna Schlaak had 13 kills without an error and hit .684 for the Golden Bears (29-4).

Wayne State defeated third-seeded Southwest Minnesota State 17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 in the first semifinal. The Wildcats (26-7) advanced to their first region final ever behind Alyssa Frauendorfer's 12 kills.

• Augsburg football coach Frank Haege will lead an American small college all-star team against a Mexican all-star team in the 43rd Aztec Bowl in Mexico City. Quarterback Ayrton Scott and running back Tyrell Martin of the Auggies are two of his players.

• Minnesota Duluth athletic director Josh Berlo signed a five-year contract extension that will keep him at UMD through 2021, the school announced. He is in his third year running the Bulldogs' athletic department.

• Junior Matt Barnard of the Gophers broke his own school record by winning the platform diving event with 475.4 points in the 15-team Jean K. Freeman Invitational at the university.
