Minnesota Scene: St. Cloud's Post wins sixth national BMX title

Alise Post won her sixth consecutive BMX national championship while Connor Fields won his third title, each of them stamping themselves as favorites to make the U.S. team for the Rio Olympics.

Post, from St. Cloud, swept her three moto runs Sunday before going wire-to-wire in the elite final in Oldsmar, Fla. She was followed across the line by Brooke Crain, her teammate on the 2012 London Olympics team. Felicia Stancil won bronze.

Florida State beats Gophers in softball

Zoe Casas had two of Florida State's softball team's four hits, including a two-run double in the seventh inning that drove in the game's only runs, in a 2-0 victory over the visiting Gophers in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge on Sunday.

The Gophers' Sara Groenewegen gave up only four hits, striking out five. She also hit a leadoff double in the fourth — one of the Gophers' six hits — but was stranded.

Gophers split in Arizona

Minnesota closed out the opening weekend of the college baseball season by splitting a doubleheader in Surprise, Ariz., winning 9-3 over Utah before losing 8-7 to fifth-ranked Oregon State.

The Gophers totaled 29 hits in the two games.

Riley Smith went 4-for-5 and Terrin Vavra had three hits and three RBI against the Utes. Toby Hanson's three-run homer was the big hit in the second game

United drops exhibition

The Portland Timbers beat visiting Minnesota United FC 4-0 in the first in a series of exhibition matches against Major League Soccer teams. United lost defenders Tiago Calvano and Kevin Venegas to red cards; they will miss Wednesday's match against Chicago.

• The Gophers men's golf team stood in 14th place at 11 over par after the first day of the 15-team Puerto Rico Classic, in a field that also includes other Big Ten teams Maryland, Purdue, Northwestern and Michigan. Senior Jon Dutoit shot 2-under 70 for a tie for 11th place, but only three strokes behind leader Jonathan Hardee of Alabama. The Crimson Tide leads at 12 under, two shots ahead of North Carolina.

• The Gophers lost 7-0 to host Columbia in men's tennis, in a rematch of an earlier loss the Lions.
