The No. 18-ranked Gophers soccer team defeated Purdue 3-1 on Friday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Junior forward Simone Kolander scored the first two goals — in the fourth and 20th minute — to give Minnesota (8-1-2, 3-0 conference) a 2-0 lead. She has seven goals this season, four in her last three games. Sydney Squires got the third in the 78th minute.

Purdue (6-4, 1-2) played without midfielder Dagny Olson, who was served a one-game suspension. The Big Ten penalized her for unsportsmanlike conduct against a Northwestern player last weekend.


• The Gophers volleyball team will play No. 1-ranked Penn State (12-0, 1-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday in University Park, Pa. No. 21 Minnesota (9-2, 1-0 Big Ten) is on a nine-match winning streak. PSU has won 32 matches in a row.

• One of the nation's most biggest cross-country meets, the Roy Griak Invitational will be held Saturday at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn. The 10-race meet features high school, and Division I, II and III college races with the Gophers men competing at 12:20 p.m. and the university's women at 1:20 p.m.

• Leif Carlson of Valleywood Golf Course and Greg Murphy of Keller Golf Club shot a 6-under 135 for two rounds to win the Senior Four-Ball Championship at St. Cloud Country Club. Carlson had four birdies his second round, Murphy three. Pat Vincelli and Gary Johnson won the Masters Division in the same event, shooting a 9-under 133 while Sheldon Michaletz and Ron Seagren won the Net Division, shooting a 10-under 132.
