Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher said goalie Niklas Backstrom was expected to return to the Twin Cities so he could meet with team doctors Friday and find out whether he'll be cleared for training camp following offseason elbow surgery.

•The Wild named former NHL goalie Frederic Chabot as goaltending development coach. Chabot was the former goalie coach in Edmonton whom Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk largely credits for much of his development.

He will work with Iowa goalies Brody Hoffman and Stephen Michalek and the other Wild goalie prospects.



• Kenyans Dominic Ondoro and Sarah Kiptoo, who have run the fastest marathons in Minnesota history, will compete in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon on Oct. 4. Ondoro won the 2014 Grandma's Marathon in Duluth in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 6 seconds; Kiptoo owns the Grandma's women's record, 2:26:32 in 2013.

• Canterbury Park made a record payout Thursday, paying $10,190.74 on a 10-cent superfecta in the third race. Lemonsrgoodongrass, at 2.6-1, won the race, followed by Lil Mighty Mo (73-1), Correspondence (30.2-1) and Haley's Comet (4.7- 1). The previous record payout was $7,266.90 last year. On a superfecta bet, the player must pick the first four horses in order.

• The Gophers volleyball team will play Louisville at 6 p.m. Friday at the Cardinals' KYC Yum! Center and No. 18 North Carolina (1-2) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday there.
