Minnesota Scene: New Jersey team routs Burnsville in Legion World Series

Brooklawn, N.J., routed Burnsville 8-1 on Saturday in a winners' bracket game of the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C.

The New Jersey power scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. All those runs came off Aaron Rozek, who in five-plus innings gave up five earned runs and eight hits and walked three. Logan Vermeer and Luke Hansen pitched in relief, combining to giving up one run and one hit.

Burnsville (37-11) had only five hits and no runs off Brooklawn starter John Murphy, who went eight innings. He struck out seven and walked two. Minnesota scored in the top of the ninth on a walk, single and Cooper Maas' RBI single.

Leadoff hitter and shortstop Phil Dickinson had three RBI for Brooklawn while No. 9 hitter Mike Garofolo had two.

Brooklawn (44-8) beat Waipahu, Hawaii, 5-4 in 11 innings in its first game.

"The first one [in a tournament] is always emotional," Brooklawn coach Dennis Barth was quoted as saying on shelbystar.com. "Stuff happens all the time with this team."

Burnsville defeated Napolean, Ohio, 4-0 in its first game, scoring all of its runs in the seventh inning. Rozek pitched the final 1⅔ innings.

Next Burnsville will play Petaluma, Calif., at noon Sunday in the losers' bracket. Petaluma beat Branford, Conn., 6-3 on Saturday after losing to Gonzales, La., 8-5 in its opener.

• Second Street City won the $50,000 Hoist Her Flag Stakes by 7¼ lengths on Saturday at Canterbury Park. Starry Eyed Kate was victorious in the $50,000 Minnesota H.B.P.A. Distaff and Glory Rider won the $30,900 Fillies and Mares Race. It was the first career stakes win for Denny Velazquez, Second Street City's jockey, and the third win this season at Canterbury for the 5-year-old mare.

• Brock Boeser scored the game's first goal and later had an assist as the U.S. hockey team crushed Germany 9-2 to clinch the Five Nations Tournament championship in Trnava, Slovakia.
