Jerry Rose of Alexandria Golf Club edged Leif Carlson of Valleywood GC 2 up on Saturday in the final of the MGA Senior Players’ Championship at St. Cloud Country Club. Rose got an eagle on the par-5, 473-yard 15th hole to go 1-up.
His par on the 18th hole clinched the match
• Trent Peterson defeated Justin Burleson 3 and 2 in the final of the MGA Mid-Players’ Championship in a matchup of two other Valleywood GC golfers.
Two $100,000 stakes
Gianna’s Dream, which has won five of its past nine starts, is one of the favorites in the $100,000 Lady Canterbury stakes race at Canterbury Park on Sunday. It’s a 1-mile turf race for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares. Insta Erma is another top contender in a deep field.
The Mystic Lake Mile, which also has a $100,000 purse, will follow the Lady Canterbury.
U gets 17th recruit
The Gophers landed a verbal commitment from Nathan Boe, a Lakeville North offensive lineman.
Boe also had reported offers from Northern Illinois, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State and Western Illinois. With him, the Gophers have 17 commitments for the Class of 2018.
Bike leader changes
Colin Joyce of Rally Cycling won the North Mankato stage to take first place overall in the North Star Grand Prix Bike Race. He is 49 seconds ahead of Ty Magner of Holowesko Citadel, the previous leader, and 52 seconds clear of teammate Brandon McNulty after 81 miles of racing into Sunday’s final stage, the Stillwater Criterium.
Ruth Winder of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling was the women’s winner in North Mankato. Emma White of Rally Cycling remained the overall leader by four seconds over Winder and Marlies Mejias of Shimano Weber.
The women’s pro race in Stillwater starts at 11:45 a.m. Sunday, the men’s pro race at 1:30 p.m.
• The St. Paul Saints lost 3-2 to the host Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Saints scored both of their runs in the second inning on Jon Kristofferson’s sacrifice fly and an error.
• The Minnesota Vixen lost 53-0 to the Dallas Elite in Plano, Texas, in the second round of the Women’s Football Alliance playoffs.
