Former Gophers football player Jeff Jones has completed his transfer to Iowa Western Community College.

Spring classes began at Iowa Western on Jan. 11. Jones was delayed but officially enrolled Monday and will be eligible for spring practice, Iowa Western coach Scott Strohmeier said via text message.

Jones was the Gophers' highest-ranked recruit in at least a decade when he signed out of Minneapolis Washburn in 2014. He was academically ineligible to compete that fall and redshirted but was able to compete in 2015.

After converting from running back to receiver, he was beset with migraines and wound up playing in only three games.

Florida sportswriter who attended U dies

Juan C. Rodriguez, a University of Minnesota graduate who covered the Miami Marlins for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper in South Florida, died Monday, more than three years after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

The Sun-Sentinel reported Rodriguez, 42, was given eight months to live when he got his diagnosis in December 2012, but he continued to work while being treated.

A native of Spain, Rodriguez grew up in New York and McAllen, Texas. He attended Minnesota from 1991-95, writing for the Minnesota Daily, and worked for Florida Today and the Miami Herald before joining the Sun-Sentinel in 2002.

U gymnast honored

The Gophers' Lindsay Mable earned her ninth career Big Ten gymnast of the week honor, the school announced.

Mable, the 2015 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, won all four events in a meet against Maryland on the way to the all-around in a victory over the Terrapins.

North Oaks golfer wins in Puerto Rico

North Oaks' Frankie Capan gave himself a big enough lead that bogeying the last three holes couldn't keep him from winning the Puerto Rico Junior Open on Monday with a tournament-record total of 12-under-par 204.

Capan, a 16-year-old who goes to high school in Phoenix, had a five-stroke lead after two rounds of 67, then played the first 11 holes Monday in 5 under par at Coco Beach Golf and Country Club. He closed with a 70.

Minnetonka junior Ben Sigel tied for eighth at 212.
