Heavyweight Michael Kroells' 12-6 decision over Pat Gillen of Virginia clinched a 19-15 victory for the Gophers wrestling team in its second dual meet of the season on Saturday at Williams Arena.
Chris Pfarr won 13-10 at 184 pounds and Brett, his brother, 7-4 at 197 to give the Gophers a 16-15 lead. They trailed 12-7 after five matches.
The Gophers opened their day in the four-team Gopher Duals with a 31-3 rout of Grand Canyon and closed it with a 20-13 win over South Dakota that also came down to the last match. The scored was tied 13-all before Brett Pfarr for a major decisions to give Minnesota a four-point lead and Kroells got another to clinch it.Tommy Thorn at 141 pounds and Dylan Urbach at 165, made their varsity debuts and got their first wins against Grand Canyon on major decisions.
U volleyball prevails
The No. 4-ranked Gophers volleyball team beat No. 25 Michigan 3-1 on Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.
The set scores were 25-23, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22. Minnesota improves to 21-3, 13-1 in the Big Ten.
Daly Santana led the Gophers with 23 kills and 15 digs while teammate Hannah Tapp had 11 kills.
Oles win soccer title
St. Olaf defeated St. Thomas 2-0 for the MIAC men's soccer tournament championship in Northfield. Aaron Stets scored in the 19th minute of the first half for the Oles, on a header from a cross by Aaron Miller.
Jens Undlin made it 2-0 in the 68th minute on an unassisted goal on a breakaway. Ben Braman made seven for St. Olaf (13-7-1) to get the shutout. Keeper Grant Larson had five saves for the Tommies (12-7-1).
