Indiana edged the Gophers 19-18 on Friday at the Sports Pavilion in a Big Ten wrestling opener. Each team got five wins on four decisions and a pin, but the Hoosiers got the winning point on the fourth tiebreaking criteria.
Brandon Kingsley of the Gophers beat Jake Danishek 8-4 in the final match at 157 pounds. Brett Pfarr got Minnesota's pin at 197. Other winners for the home team were Brandon Krone at 165, Michael Kroells at heavyweight and Tommy Thorn at 141.
Big test for Whitecaps
The Minnesota Whitecaps will play the Boston Pride at 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday at Ridder Arena in the first women's hockey games in Minnesota involving a pro team.
The Pride is one of the four teams in the new National Women's Hockey League.
U.S. Olympians Hilary Knight, Brianna Decker, Gigi Marvin, Anne Schleper, Monique Lamoureux and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson will be among the players.
The Whitecaps operate independently, playing a schedule of Division I programs, NWHL teams and elite prep teams. Saturday's game will be on Ch. 45.
U softball schedule out
The Gophers softball team released its 55-game schedule for next year, which includes 13 home games. Minnesota, which finished 49-11 last spring, will play five teams ranked in the final Top 25 and 11 NCAA tournament teams. The Gophers will open their season Feb. 12-14 in a Las Vegas tournament.
Wayne State loses
Wayne (Neb.) State lost to Palm Beach Atlantic 25-21, 25-21, 27-25 in the NCAA Division II volleyball semifinals in Tampa.
