Minnesota Scene: Gophers volleyball team wins twice to improve to 9-1

The Gophers volleyball team won two three-set matches Friday in the Rocket Invite in Toledo.

Minnesota beat Duquesne 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 and Toledo 25-13, 25-18, 25-18.

Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Wilhite led the Gophers (9-1) in kills in both matches. She had 12 kills, five digs and four block assists in the first match and 14 kills and five digs in the second.

Against Duquesne, Paige Tapp, a 6-2 sophomore middle blocker, had seven kills on eight attempts and no errors for an .875 hitting percentage.

Three other Gophers were in double figures in kills against Toledo. Daly Santana had 12 and Adrianna Nora and Tapp 10 apiece. Minnesota hit .402 to the Rockets' .168.

U aces opening day

The Gophers women's tennis team opened its season by going 7-3 in singles and 13-5 in doubles in its own Minnesota Invitational, a 13-team tournament.

Paula Rincon Otero and Jessika Mozia won the Maroon Flight in doubles, and the other four Gopher doubles teams all finished third or better.

In singles, Tereza Brichacova and Maja Vujic of Minnesota each won in straight sets in the round of 16 in the top flight.

• Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus, two Lynx players, each scored seven points in limited minutes as the U.S. women's basketball national team defeated Australia 72-66 on the opening day of the 2014 France International tournament in Paris. Fellow Lynx player Lindsay Whalen had four points.

• The Minnesota Vixen, a women's tackle football team, will have open tryouts at 11 a.m. Sept. 27 and Oct. 18 at Highland Forest Park in Burnsville. Their season opens next spring.

• Brant Nicklin, a Minnesota Duluth goalie in the late 1990s, will be a volunteer assistant coach for the men's team. He has been UMD women's goalie coach for four seasons.
