The third-ranked Gophers volleyball team fell to 1-1 on the season Sunday with a 25-23, 25-15, 25-27, 25-19 loss at No. 11 Stanford.

Hannah Tapp led the Gophers with 17 kills and hit .300 for the match, while Paige Tapp had 13 kills. The duo also had six blocks each. But the Gophers hit only .142 as a team, to .223 for the Cardinal, who got 13 kills each from freshmen Audriana Fitzmorris and Kathryn Plummer and improved to 7-0 all-time vs. Minnesota.

Samantha Seliger-Swenson had a match-high 37 assists and 17 digs for the Gophers.

U soccer improves to 4-0

Simone Kolander scored twice in the first 24 minutes, and the Gophers soccer team remained unbeaten with its third consecutive shutout, 3-0 over Eastern Michigan at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Julianna Gernes scored her first goal of the season in the 81st minute for the 17th-ranked Gophers (4-0), who had a 21-7 advantage in shots. Senior goalie Tarah Hobbs made three saves.

The Gophers play Friday and Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico, against Texas A&M and Florida State.

Saints lose on walk-off homer

Pinch hitter Jon Smith's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off closer Ryan Rodebauh game the Lincoln Saltdogs a 3-2 victory over the Saints in their series finale in Lincoln, Neb.

But the Saints' magic number for clinching a playoff berth still dropped to two.

The Saints (57-36) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth on Tony Thomas' sacrifice fly. Thomas also hit a leadoff home run in the fifth, his 13th.
