Four Gophers were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's All-North Region team.

They are front-line players Daly Santana, a senior, and twin sisters Hannah and Paige Tapp, both juniors, and freshman setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson.

Minnesota's Hugh McCutcheon was chosen coach of the year and Seliger-Swenson the freshman of the year in the North Region.

The Gophers (28-4) play Illinois (21-12) at 5 p.m. Friday in the Des Moines Regional semifinals.

Illini star Jocelynn Birks, a senior outside hitter, was named to the All-Northeast Region team for the third time.

Gagliardi finalists set

Offensive tackle David Simmet of St. Thomas and running back Sam Sura of St. John's are among the four seniors named finalist for the 2015 Gagliardi Trophy, given to the most outstanding player in NCAA Division III football.

The other two are quarterbacks Joe Callahan of Wesley College (Del.) and Matt Pawlowski of Guilford College (N.C.).


• Junior forward Simone Kolander of the Gophers was named to the National Soccer Coaches of America's third All-America team. She had 10 goals this past season, including six game-winners.

• Gophers junior Luca Wieland, the defending NCAA and Big Ten heptathlon champion, was named the U.S. Track and Field & Cross Country Coaches Association's national athlete of the week. Wieland of Saarbrucken, Germany, won six of seven events in posting a 5,789 score in the heptathlon in a meet at St. Scholastica. His score is the second best in program history.

• Freshman forward Tyler Sheehy of the Gophers was named the Big Ten's first star of the week in men's hockey. He scored three goals and had an assist as Minnesota swept Ohio State in a pair of overtime games.

• Sydney Hilley, a 6-foot junior setter for Champlin Park, was named the Gatorade's volleyball player of the year in Minnesota.
