Michigan State upset the No. 14 Gophers 1-0 on Thursday night in Big Ten women's soccer at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

Jamie Cheslik scored for the Spartans (7-3-4, 3-2-2 conference) in the 10th minute, beating keeper Tarah Hobbs. who made three saves. Michigan State's Gabrielle Gauruder had six saves.

The loss dropped Minnesota (11-3-2, 6-2) from first to third in the Big Ten behind Wisconsin and Penn State, co-leaders at 6-1-1.

The Badgers beat Michigan 3-2 on Thursday night with three second-half goals; the Wolverines (5-2-1) play at Minnesota on Sunday. The Nittany Lions defeated Purdue 2-1.

• The U.S. Professional Tennis Association recently named its top college coaching award the Steve Wilkinson Collegiate Coach of the Year Award. The late Steve Wilkinson became the winningest head coach in college men's tennis during 39 years at Gustavus Adolphus. His teams won 929 matches from 1971-2009.

• The Gophers men's hockey fanfest, which includes an open skate with the players, autographs, games and hockey skill activities, will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 13.
