Junior Nayoka Clunis of the Gophers set two meet records in winning the shot put (53 feet, 3½ inches) and weight throw (65-7¾) in the Minnesota Open on Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

Those throws by Clunis, of Kingston, Jamaica, are the third and fourth best in program history. Last spring she won the discus in the National Junior College Athletic Association meet competing for Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kan.

Senior teammate Madeline Strandemo won the 5,000-meter run in a career-best 16 minutes, 46.81 seconds.

In the men's meet, sophomores Jonathan Webb and Matthew Baker and freshman Mason Roomes won individual titles and joined senior Brad Neumann to make up the Gophers' winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:23.35).

Webb won the 60 dash (6.88), Baker the 400 (51.17) and Roomes the long jump (23-10¾).

Former Gopher Nate Roese won the 400 (1:18.64) in another meet record.

U alumni gymnastics streak grows to 51

The Gophers men's gymnastics alumni — for the 51st consecutive meet — beat the varsity team 413.4 to 405.5 at Maturi Pavilion.

"It's a great event to get the season started. Obviously the alumni come in and they're having a great old time," head coach Mike Burns said.

Alumnus Ellis Mannon (2015 graduate) won the all-around competition with an 84.900. Nathan Fortunato (2014) followed with an 83.700 and current freshman Shane Wiskus finished third with a 79.100. Senior Tristan Duran was named the top performer.
