After a five-set victory over then-No. 12 Ohio State on Wednesday, and taking No. 1 Penn State to five sets Saturday at the Sports Pavilion, the Gophers volleyball team moved up five spots to No. 16 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

Minnesota (9-3, 1-1), which entered last week's Big Ten season as the No. 21 team, followed Wednesday's victory in Columbus by becoming the first team to win a set from the two-time defending NCAA champion Nittany Lions, a 43-set streak dating to the 2014 Final Four.

Penn State holds the No. 1 spot. Other ranked Big Ten teams are Nebraska (fourth), Illinois (seventh), Ohio State (13th), Purdue (18th), Wisconsin (19th) and Michigan (23rd).

Tapp honored

Junior middle blocker Paige Tapp was chosen Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after her performances at Ohio State and No. 1 Penn State. The award is her first of the season and the team's seventh weekly honor this year.
