The 14th-ranked Gophers fell behind by four runs in the second inning before rallying for an 8-5 softball victory over Colorado State in the finale of the Diamond Devil Invitational on Sunday in Tempe, Ariz.
The Gophers (13-1) went 5-0 over the weekend.
Gophers shortstop Tyler Walker killed a Rams rally with a diving catch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, then stroked the decisive hit in the top of the seventh, a bases-loaded single that cleared the bases with the help of a throwing error.
Sara Groenewegen (7-1) pitched 5⅓ innings in relief for the victory. She struck out 11.
United signs midfielder
Minnesota United announced the signing of Kalif Alhassan, a 24-year-old midfielder from Ghana.
Alhassan played five seasons with the Portland Timbers in the USL and Major League Soccer. He is expected to add depth to United's offense, as he can play both in the middle and outside.
Texas sweeps U
The Gophers baseball team (0-7) gave up 10 hits and 10 walks and lost 8-0 to Texas in the finale of a four-game series in Austin.
The Gophers trailed 7-0 when starter Neal Kunik left in the second inning. Lance Thonvold and Jordan Jess finished the long inning. Kunik was charged with three runs and Thonvold four.
Toby Hanson went 2-for-4 for the Gophers and is hitting .368 in his six starts. He got Minnesota's only hit in five innings against Texas starter Kacy Clemens, son of former major leaguer Roger Clemens.
U golfers seventh
The Gophers men's golf team was in a three-way tie for seventh place with Michigan and Nebraska after the first round of the three-day, 15-team Puerto Rico Classic.
Freshmen Charlie Duensing and Riley Johnson led the Gophers with scores of 1-over-par 73, tying them for 22nd place.
The Gophers' score of 8 over par leaves them 16 strokes behind first-place Georgia. Second-place Alabama (-3) and Virginia Tech (1-) are the only other teams under par.
Mannon leads Gophers
Ellis Mannon of the Gophers scored 30.700 in capturing the pommel horse championship Saturday night at the Winter Cup Challenge men's gymnastics meet in Las Vegas. Mannon is the reigning NCAA champion in the event.
