Minnesota Scene: Gophers post weekend sweeps in baseball, softball

The Gophers baseball team completed a weekend sweep at Ohio State by winning a doubleheader 15-5 and 6-5 Sunday.

Jordan Smith and Cole McDevitt each had three-run homers in the first game. Smith finished with four RBI as the Gophers struck for five runs in the fourth and seven more in the eighth. Freshman Brett Schulze pitched five innings for his third victory.

Alex Boxwell drove in two runs in the Game 2 victory for the Gophers (14-8, 3-0 Big Ten) on a home run and sacrifice fly.

U softball sweeps Huskers

Sara Groenewegen pitched a two-hitter and moved into second place in Gophers softball history with 89 victories as Minnesota defeated Nebraska 8-1, finishing a Big Ten weekend sweep.

Groenewegen (13-1) struck out the side in the first inning on the way to 11 strikeouts and lowered her ERA to 0.57. Maddie Houlihan recorded three hits while Sam Macken, Sydney Dwyer and Kendyl Lindaman all recorded multiple-RBI games. Lindaman hit her team-leading eighth home run and Dwyer raised her team-high RBI total to 42.
