The Gophers swept a baseball doubleheader from Penn State 7-5 and 8-6 on Sunday in State College, Pa., completing a three-game sweep in their conference-opening series.

Sophomore Easton Bertrand was the Gophers' hitting star in the first game, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and hitting a go-ahead home run in the ninth inning. Jake Stevenson got the victory, allowing only two hits in four innings of relief.

Jordan Kozicky led the Gophers in Game 2, going 3-for-5 with four RBI. Jack Wassel and Drew Hmielewski hit their first career home runs.

Before resuming their Big Ten schedule this weekend against Nebraska, the Gophers will be host to Augsburg on Wednesday at Siebert Field.

Softball sweep for U

The Gophers (22-9) beat host Maryland 5-3 and completed a three-game sweep in their Big Ten softball opener. Amber Fiser (13-6) retired the first 14 hitters and finished with a five-hitter, striking out seven.

Hope Brandner went 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Maddie Houlihan and Taylor Chell both went 3-for-4 and Anne Miller drove in two runs.

The Gophers, after 31 games away from home, will host Purdue this weekend at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium.

•  Toby Boyer, a senior from Forest Lake, won at No. 1 singles and doubles for Nebraska in a 4-3 victory over the Gophers in men's tennis in Lincoln, Neb. … the Gophers women's tennis team fell 7-0 to Michigan in Ann Arbor, ending a five-match winning streak.

• The Gophers men's golf team finished fifth in the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C., 15 strokes behind winner Coastal Carolina. Evan Long, Angus Flanagan and Lincoln Johnson were the Gophers' top finishers, tying for 11th at 2-over-par 215. Long closed at 2-under par 69, Johnson shot 70 and Flanagan 73.
