Minnesota Scene: Gophers place fifth in Big Ten women's golf meet

The Gophers women's golf team closed with a 297, its best round in their tournament by far, but still finished only fifth on Sunday in the Big Ten meet in French Lick, Ind.

Ohio State won the meet with an 896 total; the Gophers finished at 918.

Junior Carmen Laguna was the top Gopher, tying for ninth place at 227. She shot a 1-over 73 the final day.

• Defenseman Jack Dougherty, of Cottage Grove, scored 33 seconds into the game to help the U.S. team beat the Czech Republic 5-2 on Sunday to win the under-18 IIHF World Championship in Lappeenranta, Finland. Defenseman Ryan Collins, of Bloomington, had an assist on the Americans' second goal.

• The Augustana women's golf team won its fifth NSIC title in Morton, Minn., led by medalist Maggie Leland, who had a 322 total. Concordia (St. Paul) was second.
