Gophers junior Jose Mendez is tied for first after one round at the 113th Western Amateur Championship. The event, held at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., runs through Saturday.
Mendez shot a 5-under-par 67 Tuesday. He bogeyed the first hole, but bounced back with birdies on Nos. 5 and 7. He vaulted up the leaderboard with four consecutive birdies beginning on the 11th hole. He then shot even par over the last four holes to tie with Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb University.
Mendez is a two-time All-Big Ten first-team selection, and won the Big Ten Championship as a freshman in 2014.
• McKenzie Neisen and Martha Nause each shot 72s for a share of the lead after the first round of the Minnesota Women's State Open at Hillcrest Golf Club in St. Paul. Neisen, of New Prague Country Club, won the Women's State Amateur last week. Lisa Grimes, the defending champion in the State Open, is tied for third at 74 with Taylor Ledwein.
• Claudia Pilot shot a 2-over 74 for a 147 total to win the MWPGA State Senior Public Links Championship at Pebble Lake Golf Course in Fergus Falls, Minn., by one shot. She birdied the final hole to win this tournament for the third time. Her previous titles came in 2007 and '08. Leigh Klasse, the five-time defending champion, finished second while Lynn Anderson and Brenda Williams tied for third at 150.
• Ridgeview Country Club won the 55th MGA Junior Amateur team title with a 36-hole score of 448 at Rum River Hills Golf Club — seven shots better than Heritage Links Golf Club 1. Matt Mellin led Ridgeview with rounds of 66 and 75 and won the individual title. The host team won the girls' division with a score of 312; runner-up Bemidji Town and Country Club was 16 shots back. Allyson Hansen Rogers had rounds of 72 and 80 to lead Rum River Hills.
