Minnesota Scene: Gophers edged South Dakota State by one point in wrestling

The Gophers wrestling team edged visiting South Dakota State 18-17 on Saturday night in its first dual meet of the season.

Minnesota, ranked No. 10 by InterMat, trailed the No. 20 Jackrabbits (1-1) by five points into the heavyweight match. Michael Kroells got the Gophers six by beating Alex Macki on a disqualification after a series of stall warnings on the SDSU wrestler.

Kroells was leading 10-0 when the referee ended the match.

The Gophers also got a big win at 197 pounds. Brett Pfarr, ranked No. 2, defeated No. 5 Nate Rotert of SDSU 7-0.

NSIC volleyball final set

Concordia (St. Paul), No. 1-ranked and top-seeded, defeated Winona State 25-17, 25-23, 25-20 on Saturday at the Gangelhoff Center in the NSIC volleyball tournament semifinals.

Mariya Sampson had 13 kills and Sara Macek 12 for the Golden Bears (28-2), who hit .345.

Taylor Goar had 11 kills and 12 digs for the Warriors (26-5), who hit .197.

Concordia will play Southwest Minnesota State at 3 p.m. Sunday in the championship match.

The Mustangs swept Wayne State 25-12, 26-24, 25-21.

Taylor Reiss had 15 kills and Eisha Oden and Kaylee Burmeister added 14 kills apiece for Southwest State, which hit .370 to Wayne State's .161.

• Tyler Oliver scored in the 101st minute to give St. Thomas a 2-1 victory over Benedictine (Ill.) in the third round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament in Chicago.

• Junior Madeline Strandemo of the Gophers placed 51st out of 250 runners in the NCAA cross-country meet in Terre Haute, Ind. Her time was 20 minutes, 31.5 seconds for the 6K race.

• Freshman Sarah Bacon of the Gophers won the 1-meter diving title at the House of Champions Invitational in Indianapolis. Her score was 337.10. Teammate Yu Zhou, who won on the 3-meter board Friday, finished second (328.00). … Minnesota's Matt Barnard was third in men's 3-meter diving (384.40).
