Minnesota Scene: Gophers drop to No. 3 in volleyball

The Gophers' loss to Penn State last week dropped them from No. 1 to No. 3 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday. Wisconsin, which took over the top spot, will be host to the Gophers at 8 p.m. Wednesday (Big Ten Network).

Nebraska moved up one spot to No. 2, and Texas and San Diego held at fourth and fifth, respectively.

U hockey reaches top 10

The Gophers' season-opening weekend sweep of Alaska Anchorage boosted them four spots to No. 9 in the latest USCHO poll. North Dakota is No. 1, followed by Boston University, Quinnipiac, Minnesota Duluth and Notre Dame.

• The Gophers women fell one spot to No. 3, behind Quinnipiac, after a loss to Bemidji State. Wisconsin is No. 1, and Minnesota Duluth, which faces the Gophers this weekend at Ridder Arena, rose two spots to fourth.

Etc.

• Sean Aronson, who called his 1,000th Saints game in franchise history last month, was recognized by Ballpark Digest as the minor league Broadcaster of the Year.

• St. Catherine rallied for its first MIAC women's golf championship, a two-shot win over Carleton at Bunker Hiils. St. John's ran away with the men's crown, winning by 18 strokes.
