Minnesota Scene: Bethel wins two of top three MIAC football awards

Quarterback Erik Peterson of Bethel was named the MIAC's MVP and Steve Johnson of the Royals the conference coach of the year. Defensive end Nate Adams of Concordia (Moorhead) was named the lineman of the year.

Bethel (10-0) will play host to Wartburg on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

• Freshman defenseman Mike Brodzinski of the Gophers was named the Big Ten's third star of the week. He had two power-play goals and one assist as Minnesota split with Minnesota Duluth.

• The Gophers men's hockey team survived atop the polls after a weekend split with Minnesota Duluth. St. Cloud State received more first-place votes (27 to 22) in the USCHO.com poll, but the Gophers tallied more points (963 to 962).

• St. Scholastica senior Chelsea Johnson was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross County Coaches Association's national athlete of the year among NCAA Division III women.

Johnson, of North Branch, Minn., won the Saints' first national title Saturday. She took first place in the D-III women's cross-country race in Hanover, Ind., winning by nearly 11 seconds.
