Minnesota Scene: Area Little League team falls in regional final

Urbandale (Iowa) defeated Coon Rapids-Andover 3-2 Friday in the championship game of the Little League Baseball Midwest Regional in Indianapolis, Ind., scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the final inning. The victory earned Urbandale a place in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa.

The loss was the first in the regional tournament for Coon Rapids-Andover, which had won five games by a combined score of 71-10 before Friday. After Iowa scored in the bottom of the first inning, Coon Rapids-Andover tied it in the top of the second when Carsen Syke doubled and later scored on a passed ball. With Iowa leading 2-1 in the fifth, Wil Goodin's single to center scored Matthew Brodeur to tie the score 2-2.

Iowa loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error, a walk and a single before Joshua Neyens scored on a wild pitch by Lucas McCain. Syke and Goodin combined for 29 hits and 26 RBI in the tournament.

Burnsville gets revenge

Burnsville rallied to edge Eden Prairie 5-4 in the winners' bracket on the second day of the American Legion Central Plains Regional in Fargo, N.D.

After trailing 4-1, Burnsville scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth and one in the ninth when Zach Smith singled, went to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

On Monday, Eden Prairie had routed Burnsville 15-2 in seven innings in the championship game of the state Legion tournament.

• The past two U.S. women's curling champions will compete in exhibition games against China's top women's teams this weekend at the Four Seasons Curling Club in Blaine's Fogerty Arena. The 2013 national champions, skipped by Erika Brown and featuring Jessica Schultz of Minneapolis, will play Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The 2012 champs — which include 2010 Olympians Allison Pottinger of Eden Prairie and Natalie Nicholson of Bemidji, plus Tabitha Peterson of Eagan — play Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

• Minneapolis native Megan Kalmoe has been named to the U.S. team that will compete in the world rowing championships later this month in Chungju, South Korea. Kalmoe will row in the women's quad sculls, the event in which she won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

• Sioux City beat the St. Paul Saints 3-1 at Midway Stadium even though Mark Hamburger pitched his fourth complete game of the season, tying a franchise record. Hamburger gave up one earned run and nine hits while striking out nine.
