Repeat champions are possible in both classes of boys' soccer while the girls' soccer state tournament is assured of crowning new winners. The semifinals start Monday at U.S. Bank Stadium, with the boys' Class 2A matches in the morning, followed by the 1A boys and 1A girls. Semifinals for the 2A girls are Tuesday. Championship games in all four classes are Thursday. Here's a look at the matchups:
Class 2A boys
Wayzata (18-0-2) vs. Maple Grove (16-1-2)
When: 8 a.m. Monday
Wayzata at a glance: Patrick Weah and Ethan Wagner lead a high-scoring attack averaging four goals per game. Senior Erik Williams stepped up with back-to-back second-half goals against Mounds View in the quarterfinals.
Maple Grove at a glance: Junior forward Alex Downing leads the Crimson in postseason scoring with four goals in as many games. Senior forward Jeff Clune has two — including the overtime winner in the quarterfinals.
Key to watch: Maple Grove, last at state in 2014, aims to reach its first title game since 1998. Wayzata was undefeated going into the championship game last fall but fell short of capturing its third title.
Stillwater (17-1-2) vs. Duluth East (19-1-0)
When: 10 a.m. Monday
