Jaylen Zachery returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to help Central Missouri rally for a 38-28 victory over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday in the Mineral Water Bowl in Excelsior Springs, Mo.
Zachery's return came after UMD had scored to take a 28-17 midway through the third quarter. The Mules scored again two minutes later to take a 31-28 lead into the fourth quarter.
Brook Bolles passed for 281 yards and two TDs and rushed for 82 yards and a TD for the Mules (9-3).
John Larson passed for 371 yards and three TDs for the Bulldogs (9-3).
U wrestler places 3rd
Gophers wrestler Ethan Lizak routed Drew Mattin of Michigan 9-0 for a major decision in the third-place match at 125 pounds Saturday in the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas.
Two other Gophers also placed. Nick Wanzek lost to Even Wick of Wisconsin 10-4 in the 165-pound semifinals and then, needing to win twice to finish third, withdrew because of injury. Tommy Thorn took seventh at 141.
• Chris Trotter of the Gophers won the 600-meter title at the SDSU Holiday Open late Friday night in Brookings, S.D., in 1:19.74 while teammate Jon Tollefson won the 60-meter hurdles in 8:18.
• Brieasha Hobbs, Titania Markland and Rachel Schow each won an individual event for the Gophers in the SDSU Holiday Open on Friday night and ran on the winning 4x400-meter relay. Hobbs won the 400 (56.46), Markland the 600 (1:29.89) and Schow the 60 hurdles (8.62). Teammate Kaitlyn Long, competing unattached, won the weight throw (69-6¾) with a distance that would have been a program record.
• Wayzata senior Khalid Hussein finished 10th at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland.
• Seven NSIC players made the Super Region 4 team, including three from MSU Mankato: WR Shane Zylstra, kicker/punter Casey Bednarski, and DL Evan Perrizo. Also on the first team are LB Dennis Gardeck of Sioux Falls and Kirby Hora of Augustana and S Andrew Spencer of Winona State and John Vogeler of Bemidji State.
