Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Bernadeia Johnson has hired an administrator from the Chicago Public Schools for the second time in three months.
Stephen Flisk comes to Minneapolis next month from the nation's third largest school district, where he last served as superintendent of Carver Military High School. At Carver, he boosted the five-year graduation rate by 18 percent and student attendance by 2 percent.Earlier in his career, Flisk managed 28 Chicago schools where the achievement gap for black and Latino students was "significantly" reduced, a release from the Minneapolis Public Schools indicated.
In Minneapolis, Flisk will work as associate superintendent for Area B, the portion of the city that covers the attendance areas for South and Roosevelt high schools and their feeder elementary and middle schools. He replaces former associate superintendent Erin Glynn.
Flisk's former colleague, Rick Mills, began work in July as Minneapolis' deputy superintendent for planning and operations. During his time in Chicago, Mills served as an area superintendent after spending close to a decade supervising the district's military schools and the Junior ROTC. A United States Army veteran with 25 years of service, Mills also worked as a professor at the United States Military Academy.
Flisk and Mills are among the growing number of administrators who have left the Chicago Public Schools since Mayor Rahm Emmanuel named Jean-Claude Brizard school district CEO this past spring.
