Mike Napoli's second homer of game is a walk-off blast for Rangers

Mike Napoli's second homer was a game-ending three-run shot that gave the Texas Rangers a 5-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Thursday night.

The Rangers had been held scoreless by San Diego left starter Clayton Richard until Napoli hit a 433-foot homer to left on the first pitch of the eighth inning.

Napoli topped that with a 448-foot shot into the club-level seats higher in left field to end a four-run ninth off Padres closer Brandon Maurer (0-2).

The game-winner was Napoli's seventh homer this season, and MLB stats showed the exit velocity at 111 mph. It was his 15th career multihomer game, and the fourth time he has ended a game with a long ball.

Boston 4, Milwaukee 1: Mookie Betts' three-run home run in the ninth inning lifted the Red Sox to a victory over the host Brewers. It was Betts' third homer in his past four games.

American League

Houston 3, New York 2: Jake Marisnick made a perfect throw from left field to nail Jacoby Ellsbury at the plate for the final out as the Astros held off the host Yankees. Ellsbury was trying to score from second base on Gary Sanchez's single, which already had scored Aaron Hicks. Dallas Keuchel became the first six-game winner in the majors, and Houston (24-11) won its fourth in a row.

Kansas City 6, Tampa Bay 0: Jason Vargas went seven scoreless innings for the visiting Royals to lower his major league-leading ERA to 1.01.

Toronto 7, Seattle 2: Steve Pearce hit a three-run home run for the host Blue Jays, and Justin Smoak had a solo homer and finished with four RBI against his former team.

Detroit 7, Los Angeles 1: Justin Upton hit a three-run homer and Michael Fulmer pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for the visiting Tigers. Mike Trout went 0-for-4 for the Angels, ending his 17-game hitting streak. Trout had missed five straight games because of a tight left hamstring.

National League

Arizona 2, Pittsburgh 1: A leadoff home run by Gregory Polanco in the eighth inning was the only hit Zack Greinke gave up in the the host Diamondbacks' victory.

Colorado 10, Los Angeles 7: Call-up Jeff Hoffman earned his first major league win, striking out eight in 5 ⅓ innings for the host Rockies.

Cincinnati 3, San Francisco 2: The visiting Reds won for the ninth time in 11 games.

• The Phillies extended manager Pete Mackanin's contract through next season with a club option for 2019.

• The Dodgers placed righthander Kenta Maeda on the 10-day disabled list with tightness in his left hamstring and reinstated lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu.

• The Rockies placed shortstop Trevor Story on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder.
