Michigan State beats UCLA in men's basketball

Cassius Winston scored 20 points and Xavier Tillman had 14 as No. 3 Michigan State topped UCLA 75-62 in the Maui Invitational fifth-place game Wednesday.

The Spartans (5-2) opened the tournament with a loss to Virginia Tech, but bounced back with consecutive solid performances in beating Georgia and UCLA.

In other Big Ten action, Isaiah Livers scored 17 points as Michigan defeated Iowa State 83-76 in the Battle 4 Atlantis. .... Bryce Williams hit two free throws with 13 seconds left as Ole Miss rallied to beat Penn State 74-72 in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

... Haanif Cheatham scored 26 points as Nebraska topped South Florida in the Cayman Islands Classic.

... In Top 25 action, Devon Dotson scored 31 points to lead No. 4 Kansas over Dayton 90-84 in the Maui Invitational. ... No. 7 North Carolina stopped Alabama 76-67 behind Garrison Brooks' 20 points in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Brewers make trade

The Padres acquired righthander Zach Davies and outfielder Trent Grisham from the Brewers for infielder Luis Urias and lefthander Eric Lauer.

Davies was 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 31 starts in 2019, his fifth big league season. Grisham made his big league debut in 2019, hitting .231 with six home runs and 24 RBI in 51 games

... Yankees first baseman Greg Bird became a free agent after he cleared waivers and refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

... Reliever Carl Edwards Jr. agreed to a $950,000, one-year contract with the Mariners. A 28-year-old righthander, Edwards had an 8.47 ERA in 22 appearances for the Cubs and Padres.

Bulaga might play

Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur isn't ready yet to rule out starting right tackle Bryan Bulaga for Sunday's game at the New York Giants. Bulaga left Sunday night's loss to the 49ers in the first quarter because of a knee injury.

... The Titans placed three-time Pro Bowl tight end Delanie Walker (ankle) on injured reserve for a second straight year.

Russians can host

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin visited Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg after the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed that Russia will be allowed to host European Championship soccer games.

WADA's compliance review committee has proposed banning Russia from hosting "major events" as part of a package of sanctions for Russia over alleged tampering with doping records.

However, the four European Championship games and the 2021 Champions League final, also in St. Petersburg, aren't covered in the ban.

Johnnies, Tommies stars are semifinalists

St. John's quarterback Jackson Erdmann and St. Thomas running back Josh Parks were named two of the 12 semifinalists for the Gagliardi Trophy. Erdmann won the award last season as a junior.

It is presented to the most outstanding football player in NCAA Division III by Jostens and the J-Club of St. John's University. The Gagliardi Trophy, given annually since 1993, recognizes excellence in athletics, academics and community service.

Erdmann, a native of Rosemount, led the Johnnies (9-1, 7-1 MIAC) to a share of its 34th conference title and 30th postseason appearance. He was the Division III leader in passing yards (3,352) during the regular season and was third in total offense per game (348.8).

Parks, a senior from Chisago Lakes High School, rushed for 1,075 yards and 15 touchdowns in seven conference games and was named the MIAC's Player of the Year. He finished his career as the Tommies' all-time leading rusher (4,180 yards) and scorer (60 TDs).
