The conference’s newest high-profile coach Jim Harbaugh didn’t disappoint at his first Big Ten media day. Michigan’s new lead man provided detailed anecdotes, was asking the media questions during his press conference, and talked about his recent trip to Paris. The message behind each of these talking points, though, was his desire to just coach. He also acknowledge the many mentors in his life and a desire to lead the program like legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler.
What else Harbaugh said:
On coaching talent in the Big Ten:
"My dad always said Jerry Kill was one of the best coaches he’s ever coached against. … [We have] a lot of friends in the Big Ten Conference."
On the buzz his hire has created around the Big Ten:
"I’m not striving to create any buzz. I’m just striving to coach the football team. I’m not trying to be popular or anything. Anyone who is popular is bound to be disliked. I’m just trying to coach football."
Preseason Big Ten players to watch: None
Amway coaches poll ranking: Received Votes
Last year: 5-7 overall record, 3-5 Big Ten. Did not qualify for a bowl game.
Interesting tidbit: Harbaugh reached down during his press conference and lifted up a Mike Ditka jersey, saying that Ditka was someone he looked up to while growing up. The obviously pre-planned move got a rise out of the media.
