Michigan defeated second-seeded Iowa 8-5 in the winners' bracket semifinals Thursday in the Big Ten baseball tournament at Target Field.

Catcher Kendall Patrick of the Wolverines (25-23) had a double, homer and three RBI. Teammate Cody Bruder was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Eric Toole gave the Hawkeyes (39-15) a 1-0 lead with a homer leading off the game, but Michigan scored the next six runs.

Illinois, the top seed with a 27-game winning streak, played Maryland late Thursday in the other Day 2 matchup of tournament unbeatens.

Earlier Indiana and Michigan State survived in the losers' bracket.

The Hoosiers beat Ohio State 5-3 on Scott Donley's three-RBI double in the eighth inning. Kyle Hart pitched six scoreless innings for the defending Big Ten champion Hoosiers (33-21).

The Spartans edged Nebraska 9-7 on Ryan Krill's grand slam in a six-run eighth inning. Joe Mockbee retired 11 of 13 batters in 3⅔ innings of relief to get the victory for fifth-seeded Michigan State (34-22).

Gophers shortstop Michael Handel was named to the All-Big Ten second team. The team MVP hit .328 with five homers.
