Michael Kim and Andrew Putnam team up for Zurich Classic lead

Michael Kim and Andrew Putnam teamed to shoot a 3-under 69 on Friday to take the Zurich Classic lead into the weekend.

The format switched to alternate shot for the second round, with one player hitting the tee shots on even-numbered holes and the other on odd numbers.

Kim and Putnam made five birdies and were able to recover from a double bogey on No. 5 to reach 13-under 131.

Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown, who lost in a playoff last year, were a stroke back after a 70.

Bubba Watson and Matt Kuchar shot a 67 at TPC Louisiana to pull within four shots of the lead. Jordan Spieth and Ryan Palmer missed the cut after making double bogey on the final two holes.

... Jessica Korda shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke in the LPGA MEDIHEAL Championship.Monday qualifier Annie Park was second after a 66 in the morning.

Witten to retire

Veteran Cowboys tight end Jason Witten plans to retire after 15 NFL seasons and become the lead analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football telecasts.

Drafted in the third round out of Tennessee in 2003, he caught 1,152 passes for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns.

... Tight end Antonio Gates will not return for a 16th season with the Chargers. Gates has spent his entire career with the Chargers, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2003. He went on to become the top receiver in franchise history, catching 927 passes for 11,508 yards and 114 touchdowns — the NFL scoring record for a tight end. But Gates will turn 38 years old in June, caught just 30 passes for 316 yards last year.

... Virginia State Police won't release video of a traffic stop involving Redskins receiver Paul Richardson Jr., who said a state trooper asked if he was a gang member or drug dealer.

NASCAR buys ARCA

NASCAR acquired the ARCA series, a launching pad for drivers looking to reach stock car racing's top level.

ARCA will operate under its current structure through 2019, including nine events at NASCAR venues this year. Its stops include Talladega, Daytona International Speedway and Pocono.

... Zane Smith edged Joseph Graf Jr. by inches on the second overtime lap to win a crash-filled ARCA Series race at Talladega Superspeedway.

College football: Quarterback Shea Patterson is eligible to play for Michigan this year after the NCAA granted the Mississippi transfer's request to waive the usually required redshirt season at his new school.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal defeated Martin Klizan 6-0, 7-5 to extend his winning streak on clay and reach the Barcelona Open semifinals. Nadal will face David Goffin, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2.
