MIAC: St. Thomas extends winning streaks

St. Thomas, ranked No. 3 in the AFCA Division III poll, used a strong defensive effort to earn a 30-14 victory over Augsburg in St. Paul on Saturday.

The MIAC-leading Tommies (8-0, 6-0 MIAC), who extended their regular-season winning streak to 32 games and their MIAC winning streak to 25 games, maintained a one-game lead over Concordia (Moorhead) and Bethel in the MIAC standings.

The Tommies and Cobbers meet in Moorhead next Saturday.

Ben Duncan, starting in place of injured quarterback Matt O'Connell, rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Tommies to a 20-0 halftime lead.

Duncan left the game with a injury early in the third quarter. Third-string quarterback Kyler Anderson replaced him and played the rest of the game.

Augsburg pulled within 20-7 late in the third quarter, but the Tommies extended their lead to 30-7.

Freshman Jack Kaiser rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown for the Tommies, who gained 309 yards on the ground.

Ayrton Scott threw a TD pass and rushed for a touchdown to lead the Auggies (5-3, 4-3).

Bethel 56, Hamline 21: Erik Peterson threw four TD passes and Brandon Marquardt rushed for 142 yards and two TDs to lead the host Royals (7-1, 5-1), ranked No. 14 in the d3football.com poll, to the victory.

Concordia (Moorhead) 51, Carleton 27: Griffin Neal passed for 257 yards and three TDs and rushed for two TDs to pace the host Cobbers (7-1, 5-1 MIAC), ranked No. 22 in d3football.com poll, past the Knights.
