MIAC award gets Gagliardi name

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Thursday announced that its annual Coach of the Year award in football will be named after the recently retired John Gagliardi.

The former St. John's coach won 489 games before he retired in November at age 86. Gagliardi received the Coach of the Year award at least 14 times, according to the MIAC, most recently in 2009.

Winnipeg beat the St. Paul Saints 3-0 Thursday night at Midway Stadium on Jason Jarvis' five-hitter. The Goldeyes shut out the Saints for the third consecutive game — a franchise first for both teams — after losing the opener of the four-game series 14-1. Luis Alen had two RBI, one on a homer.

• The Gophers women's soccer team will open its season against Toledo at 7 p.m. Friday at Robbie Stadium in St. Paul. The Rockets, who return seven of their top 10 scorers, are picked to win the Mid-American West Division title.
