Megan Dray hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning as the Gophers softball team beat Fresno State 7-3 on Sunday morning to finish 3-2 in the season-opening CFX Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Makenna Dowell, a graduate transfer from Auburn, drove in the first two runs for Minnesota with an RBI single in the first inning and an RBI double in the third. Freshman Emily Leavitt pitched the first four innings for the Gophers, and senior Autumn Pease had three scoreless innings.

U tennis drops first match after 10-0 start

The Gophers tennis team, off to the best start in program history, lost to Utah 4-0 in Salt Lake City. The Utes (9-0) won at second and third doubles for a 1-0 lead and then won the first three singles matches to finish, clinching on Linda Huang's 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Rachel Hanford at No. 1 singles.

Emilee Duong and Vasia Karvouni of Minnesota (10-1) were up a set at No. 2 and 4 singles, respectively, and teammate Dalila Said was in the third set at No. 6 singles when the match ended.

Whitecaps swept by league's top team

The visiting Minnesota Whitecaps lost to the Toronto Six 2-1 at York Canlan Ice Arena in the Premier Hockey Federation. The league-leading Six (11-1-1), who have an eight-game winning streak including a 6-2 win in the series opener, broke a 1-all on Maegan Beres' goal at 6 minutes, 15 seconds of the third period.

Audra Morrison scored for the Whitecaps (4-9-1) in the second period as did Brooke Boquist of the Six. Jeanna Brenneman made 40 saves for the Whitecaps, Elaine Chuli 27 for the Six.

• The Gophers' 4x400-meter relay of Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs, Val Larson and Abigail Schaaffe ran 3:32.94 at the Tyson Invite on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., to break a school record set in 2016 by 2.39 seconds. The relay placed fourth in the eighth-best indoor time in the nation this season.

• The No. 6 Gophers gymnastics team (4-1, 3-1 Big Ten) will compete in a three-team meet with Maryland and Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Monday in College Park, Md.

• Minnesota State Mankato easily won its second straight NSIC women's swimming and diving meet on Saturday in Sioux Falls, with a total of 1,079.5. St. Cloud State (862) was second. The Mavericks' Anja Enervold won her third straight title in the 200-yard backstroke in 2 minutes, 1.27 seconds.

• Alaska routed St. Thomas 7-2 in Fairbanks late Saturday in CCHA men's hockey. Matthew Jennings and Kimball Johnson scored the Tommies' goals.
