McDonald's is making Go-Gurt – a popular General Mills yogurt product -- available in its Happy Meals beginning July 4.
But Go-Gurt at the Golden Arches will have 25 percent less sugar than the Go-Gurt sold in supermarkets.
Go-Gurt will join fries and apples as a side order choice for Happy Meals, which are anchored by chicken McNuggets, a hamburger or a cheeseburger. It marks the first time Go-Gurt has been offered nationally through all McDonald's restaurants.
Go-Gurt Low-Fat Strawberry Yogurt is made exclusively for McDonald's, and has 50 calories and 25 percent less sugar than "the leading kid's low-fat yogurt," McDonald's said in a press statement Monday.
McD's doesn't mention it, but the leading kids' low-fat yogurt is Go-Gurt. The standard Go-Gurt in supermarkets has 9 grams of sugar per serving.
So does General Mills have any plans to reduce the sugar levels in Go-Gurt generally?
"We have made no announcements and for competitive reasons, we are unable to discuss future plans," the company said in an e-mail to the Star Tribune.
