The challenge: Remake a bland, generic master bathroom into a deluxe spa-like retreat
Bathroom stress: The 1990s-built Minnetonka rambler is owned by a young couple who carpool to work together and had to compete for space in the inefficient, no-frills, one-sink bathroom.
They enlisted Carla Bast to improve the functionality, while creating a relaxing ambience. Bast gave the bathroom an infusion of color and charisma, using tile work similar to what the couple had seen at their fitness center. "For the size and style of the home, this master bathroom wasn't living up to its potential," Bast said.
Downsize, upsize: Bast needed to fit in spa-like amenities without adding square footage. She downsized the bathroom's existing wardrobe closet and knocked down and rebuilt a wall to create more space for the double-sink vanity and roomy steam shower.
Luxe life: The remodeled bathroom boasts heated tile floors, a steam shower, towel warming bar and a soaking tub that replaced the whirlpool tub the couple never used. Oil-rubbed bronze fixtures and a granite-topped cherrywood vanity add warmth.
Mosaic replay: The mosaic tile backsplash design is repeated in the shower.
Calming color: Warm gray with brown, beige and gold tones.
Fool the eye: The sleek vanity mirror swings open to reveal storage shelves.
Best trick: Lay floor tile at an angle to visually extend the space.
