Marquette too much for Buffalo

Markus Howard scored 40 of his 45 points in the second half and No. 20 Marquette handed No. 14 Buffalo its first loss of the season, winning 103-85 Friday in Milwaukee.

Howard, who was 1-for-7 in the first half, finished 12-for-25 from the floor, including 9-for-13 from beyond the arc, and 12-for-12 from the free-throw line. Sam Hauser added 18 points for the Golden Eagles (10-2), who hit 18 three-pointers on 29 attempts.

Jeremy Harris' 22 points led the Bulls (11-1), whose season-opening run was their best since 1930.

No. 8 Gonzaga 101, Denver 40: Brandon Clarke and Rui Hachimura each scored 23 points as the host Bulldogs (11-2) rolled over the undermanned Pioneers (5-9). Hachmiura sank all nine of his field-goal attempts and Clarke made 10 of 12 as Gonzaga shot 68 percent.

Louisiana State 75, No. 24 Furman 57: Tremont Waters had 20 points and seven assists, and the host Tigers (9-3) ended a dream start to the season for the Paladins (12-1), who have beaten Final Four teams Villanova and Loyola (Ill.).

Southern Miss 66, South Dakota 60: Cortez Edwards had 14 points and 11 rebounds and the Golden Eagles (8-4) came back to beat the host Coyotes (6-7).

Big Ten

Oklahoma 76, Northwestern 69 (OT): Kristian Doolittle scored three consecutive key baskets late in overtime, and the Sooners (11-1) beat the host Wildcats (8-4) for their seventh victory in a row.

Doolittle, who finished with a team-leading 14 points, connected on layups 50 seconds apart, then added a close-in jumper with 19 seconds left in overtime to make it 74-69. Miles Reynolds sealed it with a layup with three seconds remaining.

Vic Law had 23 points and eight rebounds for Northwestern, which fell short in its biggest challenge before resuming Big Ten play in January.

Alabama 73, Penn State 64: Donta Hall had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and paced by a huge first-half run the host Crimson Tide (8-3) pulled out a victory over the Nittany Lions (6-6). Alabama scored 24 consecutive points in the first half.

No. 10 Michigan State 99, Oakland (Mich.) 69: Cassius Winston scored 26 points and the host Spartans (10-2) beat the Golden Grizzlies (4-9).

Women

No. 16 Iowa 91, Drake 82: Megan Gustafson scored 19 of her 44 points in the fourth quarter and the Hawkeyes (9-2) pulled away from the Bulldogs (8-4). Gustafson also had 14 rebounds.
