A woman called 911 and reported an assault in a St. Paul apartment complex Friday morning, and when police arrived they found a man fatally injured and the caller hurt as well, officials said.

Officers responded about 11:40 a.m. to the Phalen Village complex in the 1500 block of Westminster Street and saw the man suffering from lacerations to his back and head, police said. St. Paul Fire Department medics pronounced him dead at the scene, according to police.

The woman who reported an assault was taken by emergency medical responders to Regions Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

“Investigators are working to determine what led to the man’s death,” said a police statement, which did not classify the case as a homicide. “At this time, no arrests have been made. There is no threat to public safety.”

Officials have yet to release the identities of either person or further details about how the injuries were inflicted.
