DULUTH – An Edina man drowned after jumping from the Baptism River’s High Falls along the North Shore on Monday.

Gregory Corniea, 54, was inside Tettegouche State Park. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said it was alerted around 11:30 a.m. that the man had not resurfaced after jumping from High Falls, which is the tallest waterfall — at more than 60 feet — entirely within Minnesota.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources enforcement officers used a remotely operated vehicle underwater and found the man at the base of the falls shortly before 2 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office said it appears he hit his head on the rocks of the waterfall base while entering the water.

Corniea was visiting the area with his family, the authorities said. His LinkedIn page says he was director of enterprise sales for Velocity Global.

Other authorities assisting included Silver Bay police, the Lake County Rescue Squad, park rangers and the State Patrol.
