Mammoth overpowers Swarm

The Colorado Mammoth got hat tricks from three players en route to a 20-14 season-opening victory over the Swarm on Saturday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

John Grant Jr. scored four goals while captain Gavin Prout and Adam Jones added three apiece as Colorado picked up its first victory over Minnesota in six tries.

Callum Crawford had four goals and five assists. Ryan Benesch, who led the league in scoring last season, had a hat trick.

The game was tightly contested from the start. The score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter and 7-7 at the half.

U women split with UMDThe Gophers women's hockey team gained a series split at Minnesota Duluth with a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday night. Sarah Erickson scored two goals for the Gophers, and goalie Noora Raty got her fifth shutout of the season.

The Gophers outshot the Bulldogs 13-7 in the opening period and were successful on their one penalty kill.

U sprinter victoriousFreshman Sasha Davis won the 200-meter dash at the Holiday Inn Invitational at the Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. No team score was kept.

Davis' time of 24.27 seconds not only won her the title in the 200 but is also the fourth-fastest time in Gophers history and is the 10th-fastest time in the country.

Nyoka Giles finished second behind Davis at 24.54.

The Gophers also won five titles at the Northwest Open, which they hosted at the U's Fieldhouse. Winners were Tina DeLakis in the shot put, DeAnne Hahn in the weight throw, Molly Kayfes in the mile, Kathryn Ritter in the 1,200 and Stephanie Price in the 3,000. No team score was kept.

Etc.• In the men's Holiday Inn event, the No. 15 Gophers' 4x400 relay team of Jacob Capek, John Holton, David Pachuta and Harun Abda won first place with a time of 3:12.13. The Gophers distance medley team of Paul Hilsen, Alex Migit, Nick Hutton and Joe McFarland finished second overall with a time of 10:03.83.

• The Gophers women's gymnasts struggled in their first road match of the season as they combined for a score of 192.800 at Huff Hall in Champaign, Ill. The Fighting Illini won the dual meet with 194.725.
